Join this men-only photography course facilitated by local photographer, Pierre Bureau, to develop photography skills in a safe and relaxed environment.

What to expect

During these 6 sessions, you will explore different photography techniques that will help you capture your everyday life and document various situations with a particular focus on reflecting identity. Each week, you will look at different male photographers and learn from their experience and work while developing a body of work yourself.

Photographer Sylvie Belbouab will be running a workshop in parallel for women (find out more here). The work of all participants in both groups will be exhibited at Poplar Union as part of our International Women’s Day Festival, Women in Focus, in March.

All abilities are welcome. This course for those who identify as male.

There will be a joint workshop bringing together participants from both groups to discuss each others work. This will be held at Poplar Union on Wednesday 16 March at 10am.

Stories We Tell, Photography Workshop, Pierre Bureau, Poplar Union, free photography project, poplar, tower hamlets

Pierre is a French-Ethiopian photographer living and working in East London. He founded Mindful Photo Lab in 2020 to improve mental health with photography. Passionate about street photography he uses the medium to connect with people and create personal visual stories.

I’m a photographer and workshop facilitator living in East London. My photographs have been published in The Guardian, the BBC, Geographical, and in 2020 I’ve been shortlisted for The Wellcome Photography Prize. As a photographer who is passionate about human resilience and compassion, I’m helping find solutions through doing photography workshops using photography to explore the poetics of daily life in a playful way and challenges our fears and anxieties.

Testimonials

This workshop is truly amazing! It sparks your creativity and feels very inclusive. Thank you Poplar Union and Pierre for putting it on, lockdown n°2 would have been much harder without it!” – Stephanie (@stephaniepochet)

Pierre’s workshop has helped me to rediscover the immense beauty of my surroundings, even in the “pressure cooker” of this global pandemic. The practical tips he shared each week made it fun and easy to capture such beauty. I really loved the final assignment whereby we presented a personal story using a select few photographs. It really helped me to see myself, the man behind the camera, in an entirely new way. This workshop has shown me that Pierre is not only a very skilled photographer and teacher, but a man who absolutely loves people! Thank you for sharing your passion with us, Pierre!” – Kenny

The photography workshop became my ‘lifeline’ during lockdown, giving my daily walks both purpose and energy and enabling me to ‘see’ London in a totally different way.” – Paula
