Grand Union Orchestra: Roots in Rhythm Workshops
Calling all 12 -18 year old musicians! To celebrate the musical roots that link Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Grand Union Orchestra is back at Poplar Union, offering free instrumental workshops for the second year running to learn, explore and develop musical techniques from these cultures.
What to expect
Young musicians who play piano, brass, percussion, drums, guitar, bass, woodwind, strings or any other instrument, will work with Grand Union Orchestra towards a live performance on Saturday 26 October.
You don’t need to have a great deal of musical experience; those with more experience will be soloists and improvisers, the less experienced will be mentored throughout the process and will learn to play the tunes by ear or by following a simple lead sheet/chart. There will also be the opportunity for participants to be part of the percussion section if they are less confident on their instrument.
The idea is that the young people who attend the workshops will be preparing for a live show on Saturday night. They are therefore encouraged to attend all sessions – however, if they can’t attend them all they’re still welcome to attend those they can.
About Grand Union Orchestra
Grand Union Orchestra offers a completely different style to teaching to ones normally associated with orchestras. It is built on ideas of experimentation rather than limitation, never sticking to one genre, pioneering vision of cross-cultural music-making.
