A simple, friendly coming together to read new plays from beginning to end with a post reading discussion.

What to expect

So often in the industry you plough all energy and effort into two pages of sides for an audition, don’t read a whole play from start to end, follow a characters’ journey, or read with fellow, invested actors rather than into a phone for a self-tape.

At Aktualise they saw this and wanted to create more opportunities for collaboration and creativity. Aktualise Theatre decided to start facilitating script reading sessions for actors and writers as part of the R&D process.

This workshop is for professional or training writers & performers. Each month, you will focus of a different theme and play. This will be gender and colour blind cast and will be on a first come first served basis.

Next Workshop:

Thursday 27 February – The Horse by Ollie George Clark

The Horse is a play set in Ancient Troy dealing with the aftermath of an epic war which has ravaged the city for ten years. We follow three stories across the city; the royals, the soldiers and the civilians and see how each reacts and revels in what they hope will now be peacetime.

About the writer

Ollie George Clark is a writer for stage and screen. His work has led to him receiving numerous award nominations including the BAFTA Rocliffe and Liverpool Hope Playwriting Prize.

He is in process of having his play Butterfly produced by Jake Orr Productions, he’s been commissioned to write a short play for Feel More at the Lion and Unicorn Theatre in February 2020 and will have his short play Warm and Chewy produced for the second time at the Chiswick Playhouse.

In 2019, following a series of rehearsed readings at Theatre 503 and a nomination for the Liverpool Royal Court Playwriting Prize, his play Cuttings was produced by Relish Theatre at the Hope Theatre for a three week run. At the same time, his short play The Strictly Curse was being revived at the Tabard Theatre by Get Over It Productions.

In 2018, Warm and Chewy, was read and ultimately performed at the Old Red Lion Theatre as part of a showcase from Blackshaw Productions. His short play, The Selfie Portrait, was performed at the Phoenix Arts Club by Caspa Arts. His play 11 was performed by Cast Iron theatres in Brighton, and The Strictly Curse was read and produced at the Southwark Playhouse by Some People Productions.

Previously, his play Coconuts was performed at the Lyric Hammersmith as part of their Evolution festival for emerging writers. He had a staged reading of his play in the beginning… at the Bloomsbury Festival of Words. His farce, What Worries Me, was produced for a limited run at the The Red Hedgehog in London. His Greek comedy, Those We Exile, was performed at the Almeida Theatre as part of their Greek Season. Finally, his play Hold for Three Seconds has been performed in London, Newcastle and at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Testimonials

Aktualise created a warm, safe and nurturing environment for me to hear my play aloud. The advice and support given was exceptional and I left feeling more confident in my writing and knowing where it needed improvement. I’m incredibly indebted to their work.” – Ollie Clark, Playwright

The script readings are a brilliant to read new works in a non-pressured & supportive environment. It is also a chance to meet fellow actors/theatre makers. Couldn’t recommend it more!” – Megan Smith, Actress
