Sew Thrifty: Mini Quilts

If you’ve been meaning to dust off that old sewing machine and learn new skills, Sew Thrifty workshops are just for you! Give old garments and textiles and new lease of life, focusing on a new upcycling project each month.
Mini Quilts
This January, is all about quilts! Learn the basics of quilting , from creating your pattern to machine sewing your pieces, then hand or machine finishing your quilt. You can make an arty table mat, or a beautiful piece to hang on your wall – it is up to you! You’re the designer!
As usual, Maud Barrett will be on hand to guide you through the project.
Materials and equipment will be provided however, feel free to bring fabric to suit your preference and your own sewing machine if you’d prefer. If you have any pieces of light cotton, old clothes or any suitable rags you have in your charity shop pile, please bring along. The suggested finished piece will be 30/40cm.
Fabric
These classes champion upcycling so you are encouraged to bring along any unwanted clothing or fabric lying around the house. Not to worry if you don’t have anything; you are welcome to use the fabric provided.
Donations of fabrics are always welcome so drop any unwanted materials off at the Poplar Union office or e5 Roasthouse.
Sewing Machines
Sewing machines will be provided. If the classes are fully booked, you will work in pairs with one sewing machine between two of you. You are welcome to bring your own machine if you’d prefer.
All abilities welcome
You will work from a general template that Maud will guide you through step by step. If you’re a confident sewer, you’re welcome to go off piste!
Sewing Lab
Each session will incorporate a sewing lab aspect. This is where those who came to the previous session can come along and finish off their project. Maud will be on hand to support, but be aware that she will be focusing on that weeks class and project.
Teacher Profile
Maud studied Product Design in Paris and spent the first years of her professional life working in fashion. When she moved to the UK, she started practising as a textile artist, working on community projects, exhibiting in galleries and running a wide range of art workshops.
