It’s with heavy hearts we announce today that the much-anticipated debut of Poplar Picnic due to take place on the 12th September is to be postponed until Spring 2022. This is due to unforeseen circumstances concerning Covid-related permissions and protocols that have arisen this week and are beyond Poplar Union’s control. Naturally, the safety and wellbeing of our neighbours, audiences and partners will always be our number one priority, so right now, this feels like the right thing to do.

If you’re still wanting that festival fix, there is a silver lining! Our partner, Poplar HARCA, are running another brilliant event on Saturday 11th September- The Teviot Festival! So get down and support your local communities. We’ll also be launching a jam-packed Autumn-Winter season in September, so there will be plenty of ways to get out and about and enjoy all that Poplar Union has to offer!

A new date for Poplar Picnic will be announced in the coming weeks, so keep your ears open and your eyes peeled. You bring the friends and family, we’ll bring the fun!

Welcome to the debut Poplar Picnic! Our brand-new, annual festival bringing together friends, neighbours and communities that make up East London’s best kept secret, Poplar!

What to expect

Join us for a community picnic on Sunday 12 September at 11am-4pm for a day of fun in the sun with live music, market stalls, food & drink, canal activities, craft workshops, and even a dog show! Bring your friends, families, dogs and picnic rugs for a day celebrating everything POPLAR!

For this year’s event, we’ll be pulling out all the stops with a much-needed dose of fun for all the community to enjoy! Across Bartlett Park, the Limehouse Cut canal, and Poplar Union, there’ll be something for everyone. We’ll be showing off the newly pedestrianised Cotall Street with a row of market stalls celebrating local organisations and makers, such as a dried flower stall from Small Seeds Flowers, an interactive printing demonstration from East London Print Makers, food from Poplar Bakehouse, fashion & textile workshop and retail from Poplar Works and London College of Fashion and Crafts by Velina, and a Somali food stall from the Women’s Inclusive Team. There’ll be a live, outdoor stage showcasing music and artists from the area including Lyn Gerald, Jordon O, Yousuf Ali Khan, Grand Union Orchestra to name but a few. The newly designed Bartlett Park and canal will host activities all day, including a gardening workshop from the Women’s Environmental Network, Vox Pops from The People Speak, a Nature Trail from Sunny Jar Eco Hub, children’s park play sessions from the Tower Hamlet’s Parks Team, and free paddle boarding taster sessions from Moo Canoes. And did we mention the dog show!?

Everyone is welcome and the festival is free to attend. #PoplarPicnic2021
